The goal of an energy management system according to ISO 50001 is the continuous improvement of energy-related provisions of a company and thus better energy efficiency. An energy management system mainly assists in coordinating these requirements and in continuously achieving the possible and planned saving potentials. The objective of the standard is the continuous improvement of energy-related provisions by companies and organisations as well as the optimisation of their energy efficiency and energy consumption and the reduction of costs. At the same time, government concessions, such as the existing special compensation regulation - BesAR - according to the Renewable Energy Act (EEC) and the successive regulations of the so-called surplus settlement (SpaEfV) as well as EC requirements within the framework of the Energy Efficiency Act, are related to the certification of an energy management system according to ISO 50001.

The ISO 50001 standard offers a systematic approach for the improvement of energy efficiency. The standard describes the requirements for businesses in terms of the implementation, realisation and improvement of an energy management system. It can be applied by any organisation, irrespective of size or industry of the company. The ISO 50001for energy management systems has many parallels to its sister standards ISO 9001 or ISO 14001. The allows for considerable synergies in the implementation of the contents of the standards with potentially existing quality or environmental management systems.
